Wide Temperature Range
The IR02C measures surface temperatures across a wide range:
- Minimum temperature: -50°C
- Maximum temperature: 800°C
- Fahrenheit range: -58°F to 1472°F
This wide range makes the thermometer suitable for checking both cold components and high-temperature mechanical or industrial surfaces.
Fast Non-Contact Measurement
Aim the thermometer at the target surface and press the trigger. The infrared sensor displays the measured surface temperature in less than 0.5 seconds.
Non-contact measurement is useful for surfaces that are:
- Very hot or cold
- Moving or rotating
- Electrically energized
- Difficult to reach
- Unsafe to touch
- Sensitive to contact
12:1 Distance-to-Spot Ratio
The MESTEK IR02C has a 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio. At a distance of 12 units, the measured spot is approximately 1 unit in diameter.
For example:
- At 12cm distance, the measured area is approximately 1cm
- At 60cm distance, the measured area is approximately 5cm
- At 120cm distance, the measured area is approximately 10cm
For better accuracy, move close enough so that the target completely fills the measurement area.
Laser-Guided Targeting
The laser-targeting system helps identify the approximate measurement area. This is especially useful when checking small components, pipes, electrical connections, vehicle parts or areas with significant temperature differences.
The laser is used for aiming only. Temperature is measured by the infrared sensor, not by the laser.
Adjustable Emissivity
Different materials emit infrared energy at different rates. The adjustable emissivity function allows the user to improve measurement accuracy for different target surfaces.
High-emissivity materials include:
- Painted surfaces
- Rubber
- Plastic
- Wood
- Paper
- Concrete
- Oxidized metal
Low-emissivity materials include:
- Polished aluminum
- Stainless steel
- Chrome
- Shiny metal
- Reflective surfaces
For shiny metal surfaces, apply matte black tape or a suitable non-reflective coating and measure that area after it reaches the same temperature as the surface.
Color LCD Display
The color display presents temperature readings and selected measurement settings clearly. Its visual layout helps the user quickly identify current values, alarms and operating modes.
High and Low Temperature Alarm
The user can set temperature limits for the required application. When the measured surface exceeds the selected high limit or falls below the selected low limit, the thermometer provides a visual warning.
This function is useful for quickly locating abnormal hot or cold areas.
Temperature Bridge Alarm
The temperature bridge function helps compare the measured surface temperature against preset reference limits. It can assist technicians in identifying unusually hot, normal or unusually cold areas during inspection.
Automotive Applications
The MESTEK IR02C is useful for inspecting automotive systems and components such as:
- Engine surfaces
- Radiators and cooling hoses
- Thermostat housings
- Exhaust components
- Brake discs
- Wheel bearings
- Air-conditioning vents
- Heater output
- Battery terminals
- Relays and fuse boxes
- Electrical connectors
- Alternators and starter motors
- Transmission housings
- Tires and wheel components
Surface-temperature readings should be compared between similar components under the same operating conditions.
Electrical Applications
The non-contact design makes the thermometer useful for checking:
- Electrical panels
- Circuit breakers
- Fuses
- Terminals
- Connectors
- Transformers
- Motors
- Power supplies
- Electronic components
- Cables and wiring connections
An abnormal temperature increase may indicate excessive current, resistance, poor contact or inadequate cooling. The thermometer does not replace approved electrical-safety equipment.
HVAC Applications
The IR02C can be used for checking:
- Air-conditioning vents
- Heating outlets
- Radiators
- Refrigeration equipment
- Compressor housings
- Pipes and ducts
- Insulation performance
- Cooling-system temperature differences
Infrared measurement detects surface temperature and does not directly measure internal air or refrigerant temperature.
Workshop and Industrial Applications
Additional applications include:
- Machinery maintenance
- Motor-temperature inspection
- Bearings and rotating equipment
- Heating systems
- Ovens and cooking surfaces
- Refrigeration equipment
- Production lines
- Building maintenance
- Household appliance inspection
- Electronic repair
Optional Contact-Probe Functions
Some IR02C packages may include a K-type contact-temperature probe for measuring liquids, air or surfaces that are difficult to measure accurately using infrared.
The included accessories vary between packages. Confirm that the K-type probe is included before advertising or selling this function.
Basic Operating Procedure
- Install the required batteries.
- Press the trigger to turn on the thermometer.
- Select Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Set the correct emissivity for the target material.
- Aim at the center of the target surface.
- Confirm that the target is larger than the measuring spot.
- Press and hold the trigger.
- Move the thermometer slowly if scanning a larger area.
- Release the trigger to hold the measured value.
- Record maximum, minimum or alarm values as required.
Factors Affecting Accuracy
Infrared measurement accuracy can be affected by:
- Incorrect emissivity setting
- Shiny or polished surfaces
- Measuring through glass or transparent plastic
- Steam, dust, smoke or condensation
- Excessive distance from the target
- A target smaller than the measured spot
- Sudden changes in ambient temperature
- Dirty infrared sensor optics
Allow the instrument to stabilize when moving between locations with significantly different temperatures.
Important Measurement Notes
- The device measures surface temperature only.
- It does not measure the internal temperature of an object using infrared mode.
- It cannot accurately measure a target through glass.
- Reflections can affect readings from polished metal.
- The displayed result represents the average temperature within the measured spot.
- Distance should be reduced when measuring small components.
- Keep the infrared sensor lens clean and unobstructed.
Important Safety Notes
- This product is not a medical thermometer.
- Do not use it to measure human body or forehead temperature.
- Never point the laser at a person’s or animal’s eyes.
- Do not look directly into the laser beam.
- Avoid pointing the laser toward reflective surfaces.
- Do not use the instrument in explosive or highly flammable environments.
- Maintain a safe distance from hot, rotating or energized equipment.
- Follow appropriate electrical and mechanical safety procedures.
- Infrared measurement does not prove that an electrical circuit is safe to touch.
