Automotive Antifreeze Coolant Hydrometer Tester
The Antifreeze Coolant Tester is a simple handheld hydrometer designed to check the condition and estimated freezing protection of compatible ethylene-glycol coolant in vehicle cooling systems.
The tester draws a small coolant sample into its transparent chamber. The internal pointer reacts to the liquid’s density, allowing the technician to read the approximate antifreeze protection level from the graduated scale.

How It Works
Antifreeze concentration changes the density of the cooling-system liquid. The hydrometer’s internal pointer reacts to this density and indicates the approximate freezing-protection temperature on the scale.
The reading helps determine whether the coolant mixture may require adjustment or replacement.
How to Use
- Park the vehicle safely and switch off the engine.
- Allow the engine and cooling system to cool completely.
- Open the radiator cap or expansion-tank cap only when the system is cold and no longer pressurised.
- Squeeze the rubber bulb before inserting the hose into the coolant.
- Place the hose end below the coolant level.
- Slowly release the bulb to draw coolant into the transparent chamber.
- Fill the chamber to the indicated sample level.
- Hold the tester vertically and allow the pointer to stabilise.
- Read the estimated freezing-protection value from the scale.
- Return or dispose of the sample according to workshop procedures.
- Rinse the tester thoroughly with clean water after use.
Reading the Result
A lower indicated freezing point generally represents stronger cold-weather protection.
If the indicated protection is not suitable for the expected climate, inspect the coolant mixture and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended coolant concentration.
Do not add concentrated antifreeze based only on one reading. Excessively concentrated coolant may reduce heat-transfer performance and may not provide the best overall protection.
Important Limitations
• This tester is intended for compatible ethylene-glycol coolant.
• It may not provide an accurate reading with propylene-glycol coolant or other formulations.
• It does not measure coolant acidity, corrosion inhibitors or electrical conductivity.
• It does not determine whether the coolant is contaminated with oil or combustion gases.
• It does not replace a cooling-system pressure tester.
• It does not confirm radiator-cap condition, thermostat operation or water-pump performance.
• Results are intended for maintenance guidance and should be compared with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
Not a Battery Acid Tester
The pictured scale is intended for antifreeze coolant testing. It should not be advertised or used as a lead-acid battery electrolyte-density tester unless the supplied unit includes a separate, clearly marked battery scale.
Battery testing requires a hydrometer specifically designed and chemically resistant for sulfuric-acid electrolyte.
